SonarQube applies rules. Codeward runs the code.
SonarQube is the industry standard for rule-based static analysis. Codeward layers sandbox execution and AI-era checks on top, and is open source too.
Unlike traditional AI review tools that spam pull requests with unverified comments, Codeward executes real tests inside isolated Firecracker microVMs before opening a fix. Only verified, non-breaking code reaches your repository (86.3% merge acceptance rate).
Use SonarQube if you need proven, deterministic rules across 35+ languages, mature quality gates, on-prem deployment and a long audit history. Use Codeward if you want AI agents that reason about architecture, AI-era risks and runtime behavior, and test fixes before suggesting them. Many teams keep both.

SonarQube's rules are deterministic, so every finding can be explained, and that matters for audits. It also covers legacy languages Codeward does not. If compliance reviewers demand repeatable rule output, SonarQube is the safer anchor.
Codeward fills the gap rules cannot: architecture problems like N+1 queries, runtime failures, flaky tests, prompt-injection paths. Its AI findings are probabilistic, which is why high-confidence policy decides what blocks a merge.
SonarQube: Community Build free; Developer Edition starts at about $720 per year (published by SonarSource), Enterprise and Data Center on request; lines-of-code based. Codeward: open source.
Not entirely today. If you depend on SonarQube's language breadth, keep it and add Codeward for sandbox and AI-era checks.
They find different ones. SonarQube catches rule violations; Codeward catches runtime and architectural issues. Run both on one repo for a week to compare.
The final merge policy is deterministic (tested for precision and recall in the repo's harness). The analyzers use LLMs.
